Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus – Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance – was designated on tuesday August 6th, 2024 as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The decision, due to a strong pressure of the Students Against Discrimination Movement (SADM), is been made just a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country following deadly protests against her government over a controversial quota system in jobs. The decision was made right after a meeting of President Shahabuddin with chiefs of the three services and a 13-member delegation of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Bangabhaban last night.
Mr. Yunus, 84, is currently out of the country but welcomed the proposal of the Students Against Discrimination Movement (SADM), and described the new developments and a “second liberation” of the country. He will be in charge for 90 days.
