According to Human Rights Watch two men have been imprisoned on charges of homosexuality in Morocco and the conviction’s been upheld the last 30th of June. According to the police the two men, 23 and 46 years old, were caught having sex in a car parked in a remote location on May 20 and imprisoned under penal code article 489, which criminalised homosexuality, with prison terms up to three years. Apparently the two men “confessed” to had sex to the police after being caught (for what damned reason they had to confess, if they have been “caught” having sex in a car? Thats’ outrageous!) but one of them, during their brief trial on May 26, repudiated his statement and said he was innocent. For many reasons we don’t want to discuss here the fact they DO NOT had a lawyer during the trial.
The Agadir Appeals Court affirmed the verdict but reduced the sentence to a month and a half for J and three months for A. The court did not explain the disparate sentences.
Really, we found difficult to believe that two men decided to have sex in an open space (in a car!) in a place like Morocco with such a penal code! Anyway, that’s the way it seems to be. More news to come.
